Post Operative Cataract Assessments in Community
2 August 2023
The Integrated care board (ICB) currently funds community optometrists to provide post-operative cataract care in BNSSG. BNSSG has recently been discussing transitioning the post-operative Cataract Pathway for Independent Sector providers. However, the ICB has identified that there are still substantive pathways and processes requiring development to facilitate this transition. Therefore, the ICB is pausing this potential transition for now. We are aware that there has been confusion caused recently by these proposed changes to these systems and as an LOC we wanted to help clarify the current landscape across all providers.Cataract Services – OPERA (optom-referrals.org) 2. Medisoft: Bristol Eye Hospital are utilising Medisoft for post-operative assessments, you will be given a unique pin for each eligible patient to upload their clinical data from the post-op appointment. You will then also need to complete a separate invoice form. Not all patients will be eligible or able to be discharged to community and these patients will continue to be monitored by the surgical provider. Please do continue to utilise your Opera system and if you wish to register for Opera then follow this link:Practice Onboarding – OPERA (optom-referrals.org) We recommend that you do not conduct post-operative assessments unless you are participating within a funded scheme.
Currently the service pathway varies depending on the surgical provider. In BNSSG there are two main systems used to provide post-operative care: 1. Opera: The majority of the ISP providers are utilising Opera to discharge post-operative cataract patients. When a patient is transferred to your practice, they will be visible on the practice dashboard, and can be contacted to book an appointment. The clinical episode is then carried out on Opera. Once the patient episode is completed, invoicing is automatic. Further help and information can be found on the Primary Eyecare Services help pages here:
