Eye care for children in special schools – Update from SeeAbility

2 March 2021

We would like to share with you an important update about eye care for children in special schools!

Since 2013, SeeAbility has been providing eye care in 10 special schools in England. During that time, our experienced clinical team has provided over 4,000 eye care appointments and over 2,000 pairs of glasses to children.

We are delighted that NHS England has responded to our findings from this work by committing in their long term plan to providing a fully funded eye care and glasses service to all special school students.

Every child is entitled to NHS eye care and this new service will ensure that children are receiving eye care and glasses, which will help them to maximise their vision and independence.

NHS England have produced a series of 3 films for special school staff, parents/carers and clinicians to explain more about the new special schools eye care services. Click the links below to watch more.

SeeAbility will continue to be involved in this service and we are currently looking for optometrists and dispensing opticians to work in new SeeAbility NHS England special school eye care services in North West and South London. If you are interested in finding out more please email l.donaldson@seeability.org

Thank you to the National Lottery Community Fund (formally the Big Lottery Fund), National Lottery players for supporting our eye care work.
