WOPEC and LOCSU Launch Maculopathy OCT Interpretation Lecture Series / Training Module
12 November 2021
WOPEC and LOCSU have launched a Maculopathy OCT interpretation lecture series.
The new training module is intended for optometrists involved in Maculopathy referral filtering and monitoring services as well as Urgent Eye Care services (MECS & CUES).
The aim of the series is to build on existing knowledge of maculopathy with an emphasis on monitoring in primary care, referral and treatment pathways and optical coherence tomography (OCT) interpretation.
In alignment with the LOCSU Maculopathy Referral Filtering and Monitoring pathway the goal is to supplement the delivery of referral filtering for people with suspected maculopathy (wet active) and monitoring in primary care for people with a diagnosis of late AMD who require regular monitoring.
The series aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of case-finding for AMD (wet active), for both new and review patients, and so improve the speed at which people are diagnosed and treated within the hospital eye service, to help prevent loss of sight.
Working with an expert team the lecture series have been developed by Dr Grant Robinson a lecturer at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff University. He said:
“This lecture series is an excellent resource for optometrists to build on their existing knowledge of maculopathy with an emphasis on monitoring in primary care, referral and treatment pathways and optical coherence tomography interpretation.”
There’ll be five online lectures:
Lecture 1
Anatomy and physiology of the retina (emphasis on the macula)
Lecture 2
An introduction to retinal imaging (using examples of healthy eyes)
Lecture 3
Key features of maculopathy (to include multiple examples and images):
Lecture 4
AMD recognition, classification, and management
Lecture 5
Examples lecture – includes formative assessment with images and cases
The new module is worth 5 CET points.
