REQUESTS FOR SCANS AND PHOTOS

We have been made aware that some people have been pressured into sending photos and scans with referrals into hospital. We’d like to get an idea of how the optometry community feels about this. There are elements to a referral which are mandated as part of the GOS contract. Photos and scans are not in that list. There are funded services in other parts of the country which fund both the taking of photos and OCT scans and then providing them to secondary care. Whilst providing the best patient care is at the heart of what we do, there will be no reason to fund such a service if we are happy to do a full sight test and all this for the current GOS1 fee of £23.14.
