East Cheshire Atrial Fibrillation Pilot
21 November 2020
The East Cheshire Atrial Fibrillation pilot has started this week to coincide with AF awareness week. The East Cheshire local health network and NHS England approached Cheshire LOC with an idea of a pilot scheme to test patients who are over 60 years old for atrial fibrillation. AF is a major risk factor for ischaemic strokes. The aim of the pilot study was to identify undiagnosed AF and prevent related strokes and associated mortality through early identification and management. The pilot involves a 30 second portable heart rate reading which gives an instant yes or no answer. If AF is detected we are telling the patients to attend their GP practice.
We have 6 devices and have spread then throughout East Cheshire and the pilot will run for 1 year. A great collaborative effort to try to make optometry noticeable as a healthcare setting where every contact counts.
