Clinical Update Nov 2021
29 November 2021
The new End to end cataract pathway launch has been postponed. There are still a few loose ends to tie up in the background, but I guess on the plus side, it gives us more time to get ready and get all practices signed up and ready to go on OPERA. If you still need codes for WOPEC Cataract, or haven’t watched the recording of the education event yet, please get in touch with us at the LOC.
Please remember that due to PLCV Criteria, Optoms cannot directly refer Chalazions into HES.They need to be referred via the GP so that they can gain Prior Approval. If you have a stubborn chalazion that is affecting life/vision and not responding to first line treatment of heat and massage over a long period of time, you should refer in via GP.
Childrens’ Vision Screening in Derbyshire County has been decommissioned. The last year to be screened was the 2019/20 academic, so we have two years that have not received a reception year vision check. DCC are in the process of sending out a letter advising that these children attend a local Optometrist for a full GOS sight test and be prescribed, referred or discharged as per normal. This will be a potentially large volume of children and we have made our concerns known for multiple reasons; both safeguarding childrens’ sight, and our practices’ capacity. We are linking in with the CCG and are still members of the Working Group looking to develop a business case for a future service. More information is due shortly in this regard.
MECS Update
The MEC Service continues to be a success – thank you all for your ongoing commitment to looking after Derbyshire’s eye health, despite the capacity issues that are affecting us all. If you don’t have capacity to see a patient within the necessary timescale, please note that it is your responsibility to help the patient find an appointment at an alternative practice. A&E should be a last resort, because it’s not the right setting for patient care and puts unnecessary strain on local emergency services.
