CUES (Community Urgent Eyecare Service)

CUES is designed to limit presentations of urgent conditions to GPs, Pharmacies, NHS 111 and A&E. It covers symptoms which may indicate conditions such as retinal detachment, maculopathy, foreign body and uveitis. CUES is a symptom lead service – whilst a dry eye diagnosis might come from a CUES appointment, this service does not allow for monitoring.

The Glaucoma Monitoring Service is also commissioned in Portsmouth and Fareham, Gosport & SE Hampshire. This was commissioned directly between the then CCG and the practices (not via PES). As the CCG moved to an ICS this service is now being picked up by the ICB. Those patients with stable intraocular pressures and visual fields may be referred into the community for monitoring of their condition.

Cataract Services

Pre Cataract

The pre-cataract service was introduced in 2022 on the Isle of Wight as part of Optometry First.

Post-Op Cataract Follow Up

Post Cataract Follow Up is commissioned to allow patients their 4-6 week follow up post-operatively in the community. The service reports back surgical outcomes to ophthalmologists and the commissioner to ensure ongoing quality and service enhancement.

Post-Op Cataract Service is commissioned in:

  • North Hampshire (Basingstoke Hospital only)
  • West Hampshire (Salisbury Hospital only) & (Bournemouth Hospital for patients living in Hampshire only)
  • Southampton (Lymington Hospital only)
  • Isle of Wight

Low Vision Services

The service in Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport & SE Hampshire was commissioned directly between the then CCG and the practices (not via PES). As the CCG moved to an ICS this service is now being picked up by the ICB.
