Important Update regarding referrals to St James (LTHT)

26 August 2024

Dear Practice owners and colleagues

As per previous communications, Leeds Teaching Hospital’s pathway for Primary Care Optometrists has changed to EyeV. Leeds LOC with the technical support of EyeV would like to support practices to ensure they are fully operational with this new pathway for all by

2nd September 2024.

Please ensure the EyeV referral pathway is used for routine and urgent referrals to LTHT with immediate effect. (NB The WET AMD email referral pathway is currently unchanged.) It is essential that your practice, optometrists and locum colleagues have access so please ensure your team is familiar with the setup.

Ensuring a referral is received and triaged timely and securely is important. To enable that, colleagues at Leeds Teaching Hospital’s do appreciate optometric colleagues including appropriate images and OCT scans with their referral. The triaging team may reach out for extra information and clarification – your support and help is very much valued.

NHS mail will continue to accept referrals from other sources and optometry practices outside West Yorkshire. It can be also used in very extreme scenarios like outages.

Please do reach out for support if needed.

Volunteer for Vision Care for Homeless People

Leeds Optometrist Recruitment Poster 2022

VISION CARE FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE  are seeking volunteer optometrists to perform eye tests for homeless people in Leeds.
The clinic runs on either a Monday or Wednesday from 9.30AM to 2.30PM at St. George’s Crypt Homeless Centre. Volunteering just a few times a year is a great help.

Vision Care for Homeless People runs opticians services within homeless day centres across England providing tests and glasses free of charge for anyone who is homeless, vulnerable or without means. Homeless people are particularly disadvantaged when it comes to obtaining sight tests, glasses and eye care. They suffer a higher level of eye problems than the general population, are prone to losing or breaking their glasses and can find high street opticians difficult to access.

Urgent Referral Update

Please note the following changes made by Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust when seeking ophthalmology advice for emergency referrals. As of Monday 2nd August 2021 the ophthalmology emergency advice/referral guidance line number (2065335) which was a temporary measure during COVID, will cease to exist as the service will be handed back to central PCAL i.e. pre-covid …
